Unit Summary: The first three weeks provides a review of the principles of government, geography, and economics that serve as important foundational strands throughout the fifth grade curriculum. The students will be reviewing the government of the United States. It is the people who give authority to be governed. Being an actively engaged citizen is a responsibility in a democratic republic. The students will review the tools and framework to study the Earth and its people. These skills will be used in the study of United States history. The students will review basic economic principles that comprise the American economy. Table of Contents: Week 1: Review of Government Week 2: Review of Geography Week 3: Review of Economics
Essential Questions: 1. How do citizens of the United States participate in their government? 2. How can citizen participation influence government decisions?
Vocabulary:
local governments: governments that lead our towns, cities, and counties
federal government: the government that leads our country
executive branch: branch of government that enforces our country’s laws
legislative branch: branch of government that makes the laws and sets taxes
judicial branch: branch of government that interprets the laws, or decides what they mean
taxes: money that citizens pay to the government
fairness: making sure everyone has what they need to be successful
justice: all people are treated the same, regardless of who they are
equality: people behave in a way that is fair, equal, and balanced for everyone
common good: when people think about what is best for everyone
rule of law: the government is accountable to the law
inalienable rights/natural rights: rights that you are born with that cannot be taken away
civil rights: rights that create equality and ensure that everyone's rights are protected
political rights: make sure all citizens are able to participate in the political process
civil discourse: working peacefully together and defining problems in a kind way
